I seem to have ended up reading three monstrous books at once... Anyway - this is "the Finnish National Epic" assembled from oral tradition in the 1800s by Lonrott.
So far, Canto 1: A surreal creation myth.
Canto 2: An invention of agriculture myth.
Reminds me of Hiawatha. I wonder if Longfellow could have been aware of the Kalevala? Much better than Hiawatha so far, though.
