Turns out that this is research literature, adapted from a Doctoral thesis; so far it reads like one, which makes it heavy going considering that of the four major groups of sciences the biological ones are my weakest by far. That said I've learned fascinating things already: neuronal sex which includes gender identity is "largely shaped by prenatal factors." One reference given.
