Last time I said that The Alchemist struck me as obviously Jonsonian. Immediately afterward I wondered what I meant by that? What exactly does the Jonsonian quality consist in? The result of my cogitation was - petty arguments! Further thought led to these additional ideas; trickery and deception and characters that are fairly "ordinary" in status - by which I mean we are not dealing with great affairs of State of major historical episodes or the adventures of the nobility as one might expect from Shakespeare.
