With Timon of Athens, Hughes' thesis falls apart completely, when he can find no Female to embody the Goddess (because there aren't any women in the play!). In a desperate bid to save the day Hughes says that the Goddess is symbolised by the City of Athens! Easier just to say this one doesn't fit the pattern - a pattern that was already barely holding together with MacBeth.
